How to Use the Gold Calculator

Determining the value of your gold is a straightforward process using our tool. You only need three pieces of information:

  • Weight: Enter the total weight of your item. Our calculator supports Grams, Troy Ounces (ozt), Ounces (oz), Pennyweights (dwt), and Kilograms (kg).
  • Unit: Select the unit of measurement you used to weigh your gold.
  • Purity (Karat): Select the karat of your gold. This is often stamped on the item (e.g., 14k, 18k, 22k, or 24k).

Once entered, click Calculate to see the total intrinsic value of your gold.

Understanding Gold Purity (Karats)

Gold purity is measured in Karats (K). Pure gold is too soft for most jewelry, so it is often mixed with other metals like copper, silver, or zinc to increase durability. The karat rating tells you what percentage of the item is actual gold.

  • 24 Karat (24K): 99.9% Pure Gold. This is the highest purity, typically used for investment bars and coins. It is generally too soft for everyday jewelry.

  • 22 Karat (22K): 91.6% Gold. Very popular in Pakistan, India, and the Middle East for high-quality jewelry. It has a rich, deep yellow color.

  • 18 Karat (18K): 75.0% Gold. The global standard for fine jewelry (rings, watches). It offers a great balance of purity and durability.

  • 14 Karat (14K): 58.5% Gold. The most common purity for jewelry in the United States. It is very durable and affordable.

  • 10 Karat (10K): 41.7% Gold. The minimum karatage that can be legally called “gold” in the US. It is extremely durable but contains less than half gold.

Common Gold Weight Conversions

    • 1 Troy Ounce (ozt) = 31.1035 Grams

    • 1 Standard Ounce (oz) = 28.3495 Grams

    • 1 Tola (Common in Pakistan/India) = 11.66 Grams (approx) or 180 grains.

    • 1 Kilogram = 32.15 Troy Ounces

Gold is traded internationally in Troy Ounces, but locally, you might use grams or traditional units like the Tola.

How is Gold Value Calculated?

The formula for calculating the scrap gold value is:

$$\text{Value} = (\text{Spot Price} \div 31.1035) \times \text{Weight in Grams} \times \text{Purity \%}$$

  • Spot Price: The current trading price for 1 Troy Ounce of pure (24k) gold.
  • Gram Conversion: Since spot price is per ounce, we divide by 31.1035 to get the price per gram.
  • Purity Adjustment: We multiply by the decimal purity (e.g., 0.75 for 18k) to pay only for the pure gold content, not the alloy metals.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does this calculator show the cash price I will get? This calculator shows the melt value (intrinsic market value) of the gold. If you sell to a jewelry store, pawn shop, or gold dealer, they will typically pay a percentage (usually 70% to 90%) of this price to cover their refining costs and profit margin.

What if my gold isn’t stamped? If your jewelry has no hallmark or stamp, you may need to purchase an acid test kit or visit a professional jeweler to have the purity verified before calculating its exact value.

Why is the 14k price lower than 24k? 14k gold contains only 58.5% pure gold, whereas 24k is 99.9% pure. Therefore, 14k gold is worth roughly 58% of the spot price of pure gold.
